- Biography
-
When I graduated from BCHS in 1952 I worked during the summer loading coal in a small wagon mine near Newhall.
I then attended Concord College on a football scholarship for two years after which I joined the Marine Corps.
Following military service I again worked in the coal mines for one year; this time doing time studies in various Pocahontas Fuel mines.
I returned to college at Concord and graduated in 1959. I had played football in the Marine Corps, but then a knee injury in my Junior Year at Concord ended my football aspirations.
Following graduation I worked for ESSO in Norfolk, VA for five years and then for the federal government for twenty eight years (three in Pennsylvania and twenty five in California). During this time I was fortunate in that I was able to continue my education at California Lutheran College.
Also during this time I gained two sons, Kirk and Dean, who have given me three granddaughters; all now live in California.
I retired from civil service in 1992 and moved to Mountain View, AR where I now reside with my wife Sue whose family roots are nearby. Sue and I return yearly in August to the Squire area to participate in a reunion of Sparks Family (Mom's side) cousins and other close childhood friends.
I love the hills and will always be a proud West Virginian no matter where I live. I think of the old days there a lot, and have even written a book of rhymes, Country Roads in Rhyme, that was published by Xlibris. The book addresses selected boyhood events that I remember and have "stretched"; some considerably.
In our early years the six of us children were hustled off to school at Squire Elementary, Berwind Junior High and Big Creek High by our very special West Virginia Mom, Bessie (Sparks) Hardy, who has been an inspiration to us throughout our lives.
Today I am saddened by our fallen BCHS students from all classes. And I wish great happiness to all who grew up in the coal fields, especially those who attended Big Creek High School!
